New Year, new challenges!
Ever wanted to learn to navigate on the hills?
There are still 2 places on the fully approved Mountaineering Ireland Mountain Skills 1 course being run on Jan 12/13/14th.
Contact Colette for more details.
There was a large turnout for the Club’s annual introductory walk where anyone interested in trying out hillwalking is afforded an opportunity to hillwalk with experienced club leaders but strictly within the individual’s capacity; such a day allows for a taste of what’s involved in the sport and Sunday last provided a number of regular features of the outdoors in Ireland : rain and wind ! The rain stopped but the wind increased as the group went up towards Mt Leinster.
Anyone interested in joining the club who did not make it last Sunday and has the requisite fitness to walk for four to five hours on untracked mountainside with around 700m of ascent would be very welcome to join one of the Club’s Sunday walks ; please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to learn details of the next suitable walk

The club’s annual introductory walk took place on the slopes of Mt Leinster Sunday 2nd October. A group of 40 plus under the guidance of Ger and Liam assisted by other walk leaders headed up Shannon’s Lane towards Mt Leinster. After a lunch break on Clorogue Mor the group split into ability groups who either went to the summit or were happy to explore the lower slopes – all accomplished in glorious sunshine with little wind!
If you missed the introductory walk and would like to try hillwalking it’s not too late : given a reasonable level of fitness and adequate gear (see gear page) send an email to the club at email@example.com and the club hon. secretary will be in touch
Over 40 walkers took part in the annual introductory walk on Sunday 5th Oct on the slopes of Mt. Leinster. As usual an early pause was made at the former Shannon residence where Mr. Andrew Lloyd related the bombing of the farmhouse on 2 January 1941 and his discovery of the Knockroe Ringstone. Lunch was had on Cloroge More , after which the group tackled the pull up to Stoney Top. The more adventurous continued on to Mount Leinster summit ! Many thanks to all the leaders who turned out and to MC for the day , John A
Lough Firrib was Paul’s objective and in low visibility and almost persistent rain he took the group there despite low visibility much to the delight of everyone on the walk as this was a a corner of Wicklow no one had previously visited. Return was via Camaderry and down to St. Kevin’s Road. The rain ceased temporarily for both food stops during which Pat offered some strawberries and cream – an unusual treat on a damp Wicklow hillside! Descent was via Luganure Brook where remains of mine workings are clearly visible (further information ). A 13.5 K hike with 500 m height gain – some of the height gain was over peat hags!
