The annual Wexford Lions Club ‘Walk for Wexford’ takes place on the 25th, 26th and 27th August 2017 with participants choosing from a midnight walk in the Raven, a history packed promenade through Tintern Abbey and surrounds and a Sunday morning ramble around Forth Mountain.
Funds raised from this sponsored event are spent locally with 100% of money collected going to the various projects. In recent times, Wexford Lions Club have donated €5,000 to Our Lady of Fatima School to assist with the purchase of essential equipment for their students. A further €2,000 was presented to St Brigid’s Day Care Centre in relation to a new bus for clients attending the centre. Lions Club President Ger Cashman said ‘Every cent that people collect in sponsorship is redistributed with careful consideration of the many requests we receive for assistance. Participants in the walk can be assured that their efforts are appreciated by the Lions Club and the greater community’.
The Raven walk starts at 10pm and participants will be using head lights and torches, as well as wearing high vis vests but as walk co-ordinator, Seamus Flood, says ‘All our walks are suitable for beginners, covering reasonably flat terrain and are approximately 10km long. Our main concern is that all participants are safe and enjoy their experience’. Previous walkers have rated this event as a great experience and recommend that everyone should try it at least once!
The day time walks in Tintern and Forth Mountain begin at 10am and finish just in time for participants to have some lunch and enjoy their surroundings. With all funds raised going back into the local community, Seamus Flood goes on to say ‘This is an excellent way to enjoy some of Wexford’s finest walks and make a difference to the community at the same time’.
Sponsorship cards are available from Westgate Design on North Main Street and from Lions Club members. Photos of walks over the years are available to view on the Wexford Lions Club Facebook page.
