Last week end was full to overflowing with outdoor activity for Wexford Hillwalking and Mountaineering club members.
Scrambling in the Mahon Valley, Comeraghs, was on offer on Saturday. An East facing gully, in the morning, presented some challenges as the rock was very damp and greasy. Conditions improved as the day progressed with a bright, airy finish along the skyline of the Eastern ridge of the valley.
The King’s Yard campsite, on the Southern slopes of the Galtees, was home for the night for the hardy bunch who travelled. Conditions were reasonable. Tents were up before the heavy rain arrived. The small kitchenette on site provided an ideal social space as conditions were not conducive to the ‘traditional’ camp fire!
On Sunday morning a group of 13 arrived from Wexford, to join the campers, for the walk up to Galteymor via Knocknagalty and Knockduff. Having left warm, humid conditions at lower levels, walkers were taken aback by the cold Northerly winds at the summit, 919m.
The return route went West above Lough Curra to Slievecushnabinnia and Carrignabinnia before heading SE back towards the King’s Yard.
