The weather, yet again, was very kind to what is turning into an annual mountaineering club wk end adventure. On Sat June 13th members enjoyed the ‘playground’ that is offered by the complex landscape of the Coumshingaun area on the Eastern edge of the Comeragh mountains.
This was followed by a drive to the King’s Yard in the southern slopes of the Galtees. There are excellent facilities here to experience a ‘wild camp’ without having to go too far from the car. Stephan and Bridget could not be more helpful to make the stay enjoyable, providing a campfire base and fuel to put into it.
On Sunday morning the ‘campers’ were joined by the usual Sunday walk group. The route on Sunday took in Galtymór first in bright sunshine but with a bitter North wind at the summit. Visibility allowed distant views over counties Tipperary, Cork and Limerick. The group went West via Slievecushnabinnia and then S/SE to complete the circuit of the Glounreagh river.
Sat/Sun June 20/21st also promises to be a very full mountaineering wk end. The choice of the full or half Blackstairs walk is the plan on Sat. Some members will opt to rock climb at the beautiful Ballykeeffe Quarry near Kilkenny.
End of season outing in Graiguenamanagh on Sat evening and then a more gentle stroll on Brandon Hill or the Barrow toe path on Sun 21st.
