Some lovely shots from the Moderate Walk in Wicklow Sunday 30th November with thanks to John Atkinson
The ‘Easy’ route on Sunday took a route from South of Rathgormack and followed a circuit on high of the Boolas Lakes. The total height gain was 650m and a distance of 11kms. The group enjoyed spectacular views all day, mostly to the North, Slievenamon, the Galtys, the Nire valley. A steep descent into ‘The Gap” was followed by taking the old ‘market’ path back towards the cars.
A very enthusiastic group of members took to the hills on Sat 15th waiting for the downpour which had been forecast but thankfully never arrived. The trainee navigators were put through their paces with their focus being increasingly drawn towards the smallest of quirks in contours and being asked to ‘place’ themselves on their maps! Conditions were perfect with visibility varying from good to very poor at times throughout the day.
Much was learned on the exercise and it was an appropriate ‘warm-up’ for the BOS Mountain course being run this season within the club.
Following the intense rainfall occurring in the last week, the moderate walk consisted of a hike up Blackstairs and on to Caher Roe’s Den, and returning the same way. This sensibly avoided having to cross any raging rivers. The sun came out in time for lunch, making the walk very pleasant altogether.
A terrific route in early November was led by Turlough and had a sense of a really full ‘mountain day’. Starting from Kilclooney the group headed in a Southerly direction and took an interesting ‘broken ground’ route to the plateau above. A calm, sunny lunch spot overlooking the Mahon Valley was very welcome. The study of sheepdogs rounding up the sheep on the opposite side of the valley provided lunchtime entertainment. The route continued through the ‘high point’ of the Comeraghs and then followed down the Northern spur of Coumshingaun before returning back to the carpark.
A basic introductory Navigation indoor session will take place in Whitford House Hotel on Monday November 10th, 7.15-9.30. This will be followed up with a practical day in the Comeraghs on Saturday November 15th.
