A group of 70 took part in the Wexford Hillwalking Club’s Introduction to  Hill Walking Day in the Blackstairs – in conjunction with   National Trails Day . Led by Club Chairman, Ger Lynch and  Mountain Leader, Colette Mahon, both ably assisted by other club  leaders,  the taster session catered for four levels of fitness with the “top” group making it to the summit of Mt Leinster. The assembled group began together up Shannon’s Lane at Scullogue Gap leading to the slopes of Mt Leinster. On the way the group were treated to a very informative talk  by local resident , Andrew Lloyd, on the 1940 German bombing of the Shannon homestead on 2nd January 1940 with consequent loss of life and also on the Knockroe Ringstone which Andrew himself uncovered while doing reclamation work on his land. At  the top of Clorogue More and after a welcome lunch in the sunshine, the party divided into various groups depending on ability with all rejoining at Bowe’s Pub in Kiltealy where refreshments were waiting for the somewhat weary walkers!
